Italy is aging and depopulating, Southern Italy is at risk of extinction. In 2050, 3.4 million fewer inhabitants


The Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti has raised the alarm on the depopulation of the Mezzogiorno, with truly disturbing data and bleak prospects for Southern Italy . Our country is aging and depopulating and the phenomenon is more serious in the Mezzogiorno , where 3.4 million inhabitants could be missing by 2050 and 7.9 million by 2080. Giorgetti spoke at a hearing before the parliamentary commission of inquiry on the demographic transition .

"The territorial depopulation of internal areas is dramatic. Entire communities - explains Giorgetti - are destined to die. But politics is putting the issue aside".
