Ius Scholae, tension is growing in the centre-right: Tajani does not give in

It has been expected for months, but when it arrives it is a real bang. Forza Italia takes back its warhorse: the law on Ius scholae .

Ius scholae and Forza Italia's push rekindles tension in the centre-right

The bill is there, filed since October 2024, stuck in a drawer in both the House and the Senate.

A process that never got off the ground. But Raffaele Nevi, spokesperson for the Blue Party, adds fuel to the fire by challenging the Democratic Party with a few words: “If they decide to schedule it, we are ready to vote for it”. And it is not a bluff. Behind this position is Antonio Tajani who clarifies: “Parliament is sovereign, whoever wants to vote for our proposal”.

The issue of Ius scholae thus returns to occupy the center of the political debate, putting the coalition's stability to the test and fueling new tensions between allies and opponents.

The Democratic Party reacts. First with enthusiasm, or rather, with that dose of interest that is making noise on social media. The Democratic reformists applaud and invite to "lay the cards on the table". From the secretariat, however, comes a more cautious message: "Our proposal is more ambitious, but we are in. The comparison must be made, as long as Forza Italia is consistent". An opening, certainly, but around this issue a tense climate is immediately created. In short, here is how the different political forces position themselves on the issue: Forza Italia aims to grant citizenship after 10 years of school, with no room for negotiation. The Democratic Party, M5S and other parties push for 5 years of school and ask for a comparison on the issue, while the League and Brothers of Italy oppose it and want to maintain the status quo.

The topic sparks debate, Ius Scholae: the wall of allies and divisions in the opposition

Lega and Fratelli d'Italia are not standing by and watching. Lega rejects the idea without appeal. "Citizenship is fine the way it is," says Rossano Sasso. And here is a phrase that almost sounds like a warning: "We do not make propaganda on issues outside the center-right program." FdI is equally clear: a distant position, strengthened by the referendum, for Giovanni Donzelli. In short, in the allied house there is no room for Ius scholae .

But Tajani is not intimidated. Indeed, after question time in the Senate he takes a few minutes to clarify his point: “No negotiation on our proposal. Ten years of compulsory schooling are non-negotiable”. A dig at the Democratic Party, which instead pushes for five years of school attendance. “I am waiting for the opposition to line up in favor of our ten years”, urges the Foreign Minister. But the response from the Democratic front is still lukewarm: no signal from Elly Schlein, while the parliamentarians are pushing to open a dialogue.

From the rest of the opposition, however, there are calls for Forza Italia to get serious, not to turn the issue into a “summer chatter”. Carlo Calenda of Azione is ready to vote for the proposal for the Ius scholae as it is, while Giuseppe Conte, as leader of the M5S, relaunches the idea of an immediate confrontation, aiming to move the majority. If FI really goes straight, an unprecedented majority could be born, with a center-right potentially split in two. A big risk, which could upset the bank.

Tajani, however, tones down the tone: "The parliamentary process? It will start in September, now there are other commitments, the justice reform is a priority". In short, flag raised, but without haste. And while Forza Italia tries to maintain a liberal and reformist profile, within the party someone is betting that a head-on clash will be avoided.
