Meloni distances herself from Macron: "Recognizing the State of Palestine would be counterproductive."

The creation of a Palestinian state is a goal that must be achieved. But, according to Giorgia Meloni , it is not the right time: on the contrary, it could prove "counterproductive." The Prime Minister distances herself from Emmanuel Macron , who declared France's intention to officially recognize Palestine, openly challenging the positions of Israel and the United States. In an interview with Repubblica , Meloni reiterated her position, which remains unchanged : "I have said it several times, including in Parliament. I said it to the Palestinian Authority itself and I also said it to Macron: I believe that recognizing the State of Palestine, without there being a State of Palestine, could actually be counterproductive to the objective." According to the Prime Minister, "if something that does not exist is recognized on paper, the problem risks appearing solved, when it is not." The Palestinians have long been calling for official international recognition, seeing it as a tool to contain the military operations of the Netanyahu government , which instead interprets this move as a hostile act. Meloni clarified: "What I said is the reason why, while I am very much in favor of the State of Palestine, I do not support its recognition prior to a process leading to its creation." Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also took a cautious stance: "Italy supports the two-people, two-state solution. But recognition of the new Palestinian state must occur simultaneously with their recognition of the State of Israel. We are interested in peace, not the victory of one over the other."
For their part, Palestinians greeted Macron's announcement with mixed reactions. Nabil Abdel Razek , a resident of Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is based, told AFP : "We hope this decision will be implemented and that most, if not all, countries in the world will follow France's example by recognizing the Palestinian people's right to an independent state ." "All decisions not only affirm the rights of the Palestinian people, but also contribute to changing the violent reality in the region and establishing greater stability," Ahmed Ghoneim, a political activist, told AFP.
