Apple Releases iOS 18.5: The New Features

The iOS 18.5 update expands satellite communications access for iPhone 13 devices also in the European market, introduces new parental control features, improves the user experience
Apple has officially released iOS 18.5, an operating system update that introduces significant improvements in terms of connectivity and functionality, with a particular focus on access to satellite communications for the iPhone 13 series. This update is part of the company's broader strategy to expand the accessibility of emergency technologies and advanced connectivity to devices prior to the iPhone 14 series. With iOS 18.5, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max devices receive support for satellite features provided by mobile operators for the first time. In Europe, this could translate into integration with services offered by local providers or partnerships with emerging satellite networks, such as Starlink, already active in the United States through the operator T-Mobile.
It is important to note that this enablement only applies to satellite services provided by carriers and does not include Apple’s proprietary emergency features, such as Emergency SOS via Satellite, which remain limited to iPhone 14 models and later. However, the ability to access alternative communication services when there is no cellular coverage represents a step forward for the safety and continuity of communications in remote areas. In addition to the improvements in connectivity, iOS 18.5 introduces improvements for families. A new feature is now available that notifies parents whenever the Screen Time passcode is used on a child-controlled device. This further strengthens the tools available to parents to monitor the responsible use of devices by their children.
On the aesthetic front, a new wallpaper called Pride Harmony has been added, in continuity with Apple's annual initiatives in support of the LGBTQIA+ community, also available for European users. Other improvements include the usual general optimizations and minor bug fixes to ensure greater system stability. Apple specifies that some features may not be available in all regions or on all devices, depending on local regulations, agreements with carriers and hardware features. European users are advised to check the availability of services with their mobile operators. The iOS 18.5 update is available for download via the device settings.
