What actions will businesses in the Historic Center affected by the CNTE sit-in take?

Twenty-three days after the National Coordinator of Education Workers' protest in the capital's Zócalo , the damage to more than 30,000 establishments in the city's first square exceeds 25 billion pesos due to lost sales.

Intermittent closures on key roads such as Reforma and Insurgentes , as well as the recent riots in front of the Ministry of the Interior and the facilities of the National Union of Education Workers this Thursday, have intensified the negative impact on businesses, workers and visitors to the area, warned the president of the Council for the Development of Small Businesses (ConComercioPequeño), Gerardo López Becerra.

"The large encampment set up in the first square has paralyzed commercial activity in one of the most important areas of the country," he said.

López Becerra warned that the prolonged sit-in and blockades reflect the stalemate in the dialogue between the dissident teachers and the authorities.

"The roundtables aren't working. The conflict is worsening, and the government isn't implementing effective containment protocols," he said.

In response to the situation, the business organization urged the federal and Mexico City governments in a statement to reach an agreement with the CNTE that would allow for the lifting of the encampment and the reactivation of the local economy.

"This is not about repressing or violating social movements. The State has the resources for dialogue and negotiation to peacefully resolve conflicts without further affecting merchants, workers, and citizens," López Becerra said.

ConComercioPequeño announced that next week they will undertake visible protest actions , such as placing banners on businesses in the Historic Center with messages expressing the frustration of those affected by the economic paralysis.

The organization warned that the protests could escalate if effective measures are not taken to free the Zócalo and guarantee the right to work.
