Antarctica is considered the most inhospitable continent on Earth, due to an extreme combination of climatic, geographical, and isolation factors. The climate is extremely cold, the winds are intense, and there are no cities or stable civilian populations. All of this makes it one of the most difficult terrains to explore.

Just a couple of years ago, a satellite image began circulating online showing a geographical feature covered in a layer of snow. Its visual appearance, when viewed from certain angles or with accumulated snow, resembles a four-sided pyramid.

The rock formation raised several questions about its origin and its unique shape. In fact, some have even attributed its construction to an ancient civilization or even extraterrestrials.

But, really, what is behind this curious object?

What science says

The first thing to know is that there are multiple similar formations around the Earth, and that's the main reason why extraordinary theories are often dismissed.

Science suggests that this supposed pyramid is a "nunatak" mountain, a rocky peak that juts out from the ice or glaciers. Its shape may appear symmetrical due to glacial and wind erosion, processes that shape the rock over millions of years.

This mountain is part of a mountain range called the Ellsworth Range, which is about 400 kilometers long and 48 kilometers wide, so it's natural that some peaks are higher than others and protrude from the ice. Added to this is the fact that constant Antarctic winds and the movement of the ice can generate inclined planes and sharp angles that give it a "geometric" appearance.

Furthermore, geological and climatological researchers working in Antarctica have pointed out that it is a natural formation without human intervention.
