Spain prepares for the 150th anniversary of the birth of renowned composer Manuel de Falla.

The Spanish government is preparing for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Manuel de Falla , one of the most renowned composers of the 20th century , who died in Argentina . The Spanish Ministry of Culture will double the budget of the Manuel de Falla Archive in the city of Granada, among other purposes, to commemorate the 150th anniversary in 2026.

The Spanish Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, visited the archive, the largest and best-preserved collection of works by composers and creators of his time.

Funding from the ministry will increase from €75,000 to €150,000 annually to support improvements in archive management and preservation.

Additionally, the Spanish government will collaborate with the Manuel de Falla Foundation to promote the preservation and dissemination of the archive.

Celebration in 2026

In preparation for the 150th anniversary celebration in 2026, the ministry and the foundation will organize activities to promote this figure , fostering awareness of his work and legacy.

Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) is one of the most relevant and international composers of 20th century Spanish music , author of emblematic works such as the pantomime 'El amor brujo', the ballet 'El sombrero de tres picos' or the 'Fantasía bética' for piano, and his impact has been notable on subsequent generations of composers.

In 1920 he took up residence in Granada, until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War forced him into exile in Argentina , where he died in Alta Gracia.

A rich archive

The archive includes a historical collection and an extensive reference library on the composer and his era, making it one of the most comprehensive collections of that historical period.

It houses the composer's handwritten scores and librettos, as well as correspondence, photographs, personal documents, and Falla's own library, among other collections.

Over the years , collections from people linked to Manuel de Falla have been added , making this one of the most extensive, comprehensive and best-preserved archives of the creators of his time, allowing for a broad understanding of his figure and work, as well as that of many of his contemporaries.
