The economy declined in these 25 states in the last quarter of 2024.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, economic activity in 25 entities of the country reported a decline compared to the immediately preceding period, reveal the data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

The states that recorded the sharpest contractions in economic activity during the reference period were: Sinaloa, with a quarterly decline of 6.8%; Tabasco, -3.4%; Michoacán, -2.7%; Hidalgo, -2.6%; and Oaxaca and Durango, with a quarterly decline of -2.2%.

On the other hand, the state economies that registered the greatest growth during the October-December 2024 period were: Baja California Sur, with an increase of 1.4%; Guerrero, 1.3%; Colima, 1.2%; Tamaulipas, 1.1%; and Mexico City, 0.9%.

Sectoral dynamics

By large divisions and with original figures, In the agricultural sector, 17 entities reported growth in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year.

The regions with the largest increases were Zacatecas, with a 19.8% increase; Campeche, with a 19.6% increase; and Mexico City, with a 16.9% increase. Conversely, the largest annual decreases were Sinaloa, with a 28.6% decrease; Baja California, with a 21.5% decrease; and Quintana Roo, with a 19.3% decrease.

In the industrial sector, 17 states achieved positive results, including: Oaxaca, with an annual increase of 11.8%; Guerrero, with 9.1%; and Baja California Sur, with 9.0%. The largest declines were: Quintana Roo, with an annual drop of 57.1%; Campeche, with a drop of -18.0%; and Tabasco, with a drop of -17.0%.

In the services sector, 27 entities made progress in the reference period. The most dynamic regions were Guerrero, with an increase of 11.1%; Chiapas, with 4.2%; and Mexico City, with 4.0%. The most notable declines were Campeche, with an annual contraction of 1.5%; Quintana Roo, with a decrease of 0.6%; and Morelos, with a decrease of 0.5%.
