The United Kingdom and the EU meet this Monday to reset their relationship after Brexit.

The United Kingdom and the EU meet this Monday to reset their relationship after Brexit.

The United Kingdom and the European Union will hold their first summit in London this Monday aimed at resetting their ties after Brexit, although the meeting is hampered by challenges in bringing positions closer together to reach an agreement on various issues, such as trade and security.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a Labour member, will receive the President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, at Lancaster House in central London tomorrow.

When he came to power in July 2024 , the Labour leader promised a new relationship with the EU club, particularly on security issues to address the threat Russia poses to Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The goal of the London meeting is to reach a comprehensive agreement , although negotiators have admitted that there are difficulties and that they will continue to hold talks until the last minute.

Cabinet Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds admitted to Sky News today that "there is still no final agreement . We are in the final hours. I always expected a very tight deal to be reached, because we are negotiating hard in the national interest."

He stated that the Government is seeking to negotiate a food agreement as part of a successful pact, as well as the passport control process for British tourists in the EU.

"I would love for them to be able to cross the border more quickly that way. It's certainly something we've been pushing with the EU, and I think it will be very helpful for the British," he added.

As part of the agreement, the British government could accept an EU proposal for youth mobility , as well as ease passport controls so British tourists can use e-gates upon arrival at European destinations. Sanitary and phytosanitary measures, internal security, and migration will also be addressed, among other things.

Starmer argued yesterday that the reciprocal youth mobility program with the EU will not mean a return to free movement, which the United Kingdom abandoned after Brexit and is a red line.

The program would allow young people from both countries to study, work, or live in British territory and the Twenty-Seven, respectively, for a specified period.

After the US and India

Starmer has maintained that he hopes to close a deal with the EU this Monday, following the trade agreements sealed in recent weeks with India and the US, which would allow for the reduction or elimination of tariffs on a wide range of products manufactured in the United Kingdom.

According to a government statement today, better collaboration with the EU will benefit workers and generate more income.

"In these times of great uncertainty and volatility , the UK will not respond by turning inward, but by proudly taking its place on the world stage, strengthening our alliances and securing deals for the benefit of the British people," Starmer said in the statement.

"First India, then the United States: in just the last two weeks, jobs have been saved , growth has accelerated, and wages have risen. More money in the pockets of British workers, achieved through agreements," he added.

This Monday, he stressed, the Government will take "a further step," with "more benefits for the United Kingdom as a result of a strengthened partnership with the European Union. It will be positive for our jobs, our bills, and our borders." EFE
