Trump diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency

U.S. President Donald Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency after undergoing a medical examination for swelling in his legs, the White House reported Thursday, July 17.
According to the presidential physician, Donald Trump, 79, suffers from "chronic venous insufficiency," a condition in which damaged veins in the legs do not maintain adequate blood flow, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. She added that it is a "benign and common condition" and "deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease" has not been observed.
Responding to the recent photos of the president's bruised hands, Leavitt stated that the tumors are due to "mild soft tissue irritation caused by frequent handshakes and aspirin use," which he takes as a "cardiovascular preventative."
What is chronic venous insufficiency, the disease Trump suffers from?According to the National Library of Medicine, on the Medline Plus health portal, chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which the veins have trouble carrying blood from the legs to the heart.
When you're healthy, the valves in the deep veins of the leg keep blood flowing back toward the heart, the article explains. With long-term (chronic) venous insufficiency, the vein walls weaken and the valves become damaged. This causes the veins to remain engorged with blood, especially when standing.
Chronic venous insufficiency, says Medline Plus, is a long-term condition. It is most commonly caused by malfunctioning valves in the veins, although it can also occur as a result of an old blood clot in the legs.
Risk factors for venous insufficiency include:
- Age
- Family history of this condition
- Female sex (related to progesterone hormone levels)
- History of deep vein thrombosis in the legs
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Sitting or standing for long periods of time
- Tall stature
