MEXICO CITY (apro).- After 17 days of intense mobilization in Mexico City, marked by a sit-in in the Zócalo and protest actions on avenues and at the airport to demand the withdrawal of the 2007 ISSSTE law and a salary increase, teachers from the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) decided to end the strike and return to the classrooms.

This Saturday, the members of the fiercely loyal Section 22 voted to lift the protest that began on May 15. This protest led teachers to hold several roundtable discussions with the federal government, but none of these discussions yielded satisfactory agreements for the dissident teachers. This heightened tensions in negotiations with the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) and the Ministry of Public Education.

The CNTE, which did not have an audience with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo—who canceled the meeting after teachers blocked Mexico City International Airport (AICM)—will organize the lifting of the protest and define its next actions at its next National Representative Assembly, scheduled to take place this Saturday.

"Although the CNTE of Oaxaca is one of the strongest sections, nothing has been decided yet. Everything will have to be decided within the National Representative Assembly," said Eva Hinojosa, leader of Section 18 of Michoacán, according to El Universal.
