A quorum was lacking and the debate on indefinite reelections in the Buenos Aires Legislature was postponed.
indefinite re-elections
The Buenos Aires Senate postponed the debate on indefinite reelections due to a lack of quorum and consensus among the legislative blocs.

The discussion on indefinite reelections has been put on hold again. The Buenos Aires City Legislature held its second regular session of the year on Tuesday, but failed to achieve the necessary quorum to advance the bills intended to benefit both legislators and mayors , amid a climate marked by secrecy and a lack of political consensus.

The main bill, sponsored by Senator Luis Vivona (Union for the Homeland), was unable to be discussed after a recess. Despite being ready for debate in the chamber, it failed to garner the necessary votes. Meanwhile, a similar initiative by Peronist Senator Ayelén Durán , which also allows for the indefinite reelection of municipal leaders, was referred to committee and has not yet been scheduled for discussion.

The initiatives reveal differences within the ruling party. While Kirchnerism supports Vivona's project, Governor Axel Kicillof is promoting Durán's, which expands the scope to mayors . So far, neither proposal has made progress, in part due to a lack of coordination between the Peronist blocs.

The session in the Buenos Aires Senate during which the indefinite reelection of legislators was to be discussed fell through. A senator from Massa's party and opposition blocs blocked the move.

The Buenos Aires Senate decided to move on to other business. Among them, it discussed a bill by Senator Sergio Raúl Vargas (Unión Renovación y Fe) to create an advisory council for industrial, mining, and productive development, in addition to several declaratory initiatives.

The discussion of indefinite reelections was left off the agenda, and the silence among legislators was notable. No one wanted to anticipate when the debate would resume, or whether any of the bills might advance in the upcoming sessions.

Durán's bill was sent to the General Legislation Committee , but there are no clear signs that it will be prioritized in the short term. Vivona's bill, on the other hand, is technically ready to be voted on, although it remains stalled for now.

There were no signs of support from the opposition either. Most blocs chose not to engage in what they consider a sensitive discussion. Therefore, the lack of consensus is holding back the debate. The scenario shows a divided legislature, where internal differences complicate any attempt to address weighty bills. The discussion on indefinite reelections will remain postponed until further notice.
