Sheinbaum: Firm in Defense of Remittances and Rejection of the Stigma of Sinaloa

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo , during her visit to Mazatlán, Sinaloa, last Saturday, issued forceful political statements: a frontal rejection of any US tax on remittances , threatening mobilizations, and a staunch defense of Sinaloa's image in the face of stigmatization.

One of the central themes of his message was the defense of remittances sent by Mexicans from the United States, which, he emphasized, amount to $64 billion annually and constitute a fundamental pillar for the economy of countless Mexican families.

"If necessary, we will mobilize. We do not want taxes on remittances," the President declared, calling any measure that seeks to tax these transfers unfair. This stance not only seeks to protect a vital source of income for the country, but also sends a clear signal to U.S. authorities about the importance Mexico places on this financial flow and the well-being of its citizens abroad. The threat of mobilization underscores the seriousness with which the Mexican government would approach any attempt to affect these resources. This firmness can be interpreted as a strategy to influence political debate in the U.S. before formal decisions are made, and, domestically, reinforces the image of a leader who protects national interests and those of its most vulnerable citizens.

At the same event, where the "House-to-House Health" program was launched and the "Wellness Pharmacies" were announced, President Sheinbaum dedicated a significant portion of her speech to reclaiming Sinaloa's image.

"We will not allow Sinaloa to be stigmatized; it is a hardworking nation," he stated forcefully. He highlighted the state's crucial role in national agricultural production, referring to it as "Mexico's breadbasket" and emphasizing that "without corn, there is no country, and Sinaloa is the main producer."

BBVA: Remittance tax would be unfair and would affect poor migrants

This message is particularly relevant given that Sinaloa has historically been associated with drug trafficking. The presidential defense seeks to counter this narrative by focusing on the hard work of its people and their essential contribution to the country's food sovereignty. This communication strategy, especially when carried out in the state itself and at a time close to significant security operations (such as the neutralization of "El Perris"), appears aimed at strengthening local morale, fostering a more balanced perception of the region, and attracting investment, separating the population's identity from criminal activities.

"If necessary, we will mobilize; we don't want taxes on remittances," President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

President Sheinbaum's statements in Mazatlán reflect a political agenda that combines the defense of national economic interests with a narrative of social and regional vindication, all framed within the presentation of social welfare programs. The synergy of these messages seeks to project an image of active governance that is sensitive to citizen concerns.
