The Government assured that poverty fell to 31.7% due to the drop in inflation and social assistance.

The government reported that poverty fell to 31.7% and extreme poverty to 7.3% during the first quarter of 2025. This figure comes from a report prepared by the Ministry of Human Capital , through the National Council for the Coordination of Social Policies (CNCPS), based on estimates from INDEC . According to the ministry led by Sandra Pettovello , the decline is due to macroeconomic balance, lower inflation , and direct transfers to the most vulnerable sectors of the population.

The survey indicates that, in the same quarter of 2024, poverty had reached a peak of 54.8% . The year-on-year comparison shows a drop of 23.1 percentage points . The latest official INDEC measurement, corresponding to the second half of 2024, showed a poverty rate of 38.1% . Meanwhile, the first half of that year closed at 52.9%.

The Ministry clarified that INDEC publishes these figures twice a year. The next official update will be released in September and will cover the entire first half of 2025. Meanwhile, the government used updated projections to show an improvement in social indicators.

Javier Milei 's government emphasized that the decline in poverty reflects the direct impact of the economic measures implemented since the beginning of the year. Among these measures, they mentioned inflation control, price stability, and the strengthening of social assistance . The improvement in the purchasing power of the lowest-income sectors was another factor highlighted.

Among the key policies, they mentioned the increase in the AUH (Undergraduate Health Insurance) and other direct transfer programs. They also highlighted fiscal balance and order in public finances, which created a more stable environment for low-income households.

The report concludes that the reduction in poverty was not accidental, but rather a response to specific economic decisions. In this regard, the Government is confident that the coming months will allow this trend to be consolidated. However, they admit that there are still severely affected sectors that require constant attention.
