US government offers discount on cloud services

Google Cloud, a subsidiary of Google , is finalizing talks with the General Services Administration (GSA) to sign a contract to provide cloud services to the government and key state agencies.

According to the British newspaper Financial Times, citing a high-ranking official from the GSA, Google offered a 75 percent discount on the initial offer price for selected types of software and cloud solutions.

In April, Google also offered a 75% discount until the end of September, with the option to extend it for additional months, on the Workspace solution, which increases productivity and allows for faster and more secure communication within task groups.

The US government previously signed a contract with Oracle, and Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are next in line, also offering 70 to 80 percent discounts. Saleforce gave the government a 90 percent discount on Slack until the end of November.

Government spending on cloud services is estimated at $20 billion this year. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aims to reduce it by at least 30%.
