Aitana Bonmatí leaves the hospital after recovering from viral meningitis and will return to the national team in the coming days.

Aitana Bonmatí leaves the hospital after recovering from viral meningitis and will return to the national team in the coming days.

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after being hospitalized for several days due to viral meningitis and will return to the Spanish national team "in the coming days."

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) reported on Bonmatí's health status on its website, although it did not specify when he will arrive at the training camp of the team managed by Montse Tomé , who will fly to Switzerland this Sunday to play in the European Championship, where he will debut next Thursday against Portugal in Bern.

Aitana was unable to train on Thursday due to a slight fever, and when it persisted into Friday, she underwent tests that determined she had viral meningitis.

Tomé announced the hospitalization of one of the national team's captains last Friday at the end of the friendly match that Spain won 3-1 against Japan at the Butarque stadium (Leganés) , for which Bonmatí was not included in the squad.

"At first, everything was going well, but in the final test, she was diagnosed with viral meningitis. It's under control, just as the doctor told me. She's hospitalized, but we don't know the timeframe. We have to be patient. Aitana is extremely important; we're going to wait for her until the end, no matter what," the coach explained.

Shortly after, the Catalan Barça player posted a photo from her hospital bed while watching her teammates' match.

The last time Bonmatí was seen was last Thursday when he posed for a photo with the rest of the team along with the president of the RFEF, Rafael Louzán , at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas.

The day before, he also participated in the audience that Queen Letizia offered to the national team at the Zarzuela Palace.

After their Euro 2019 opener against Portugal, with the uncertainty surrounding Bonmatí's availability, reigning world champions Spain will face Belgium on July 7 and, four days later, close out the group stage against Italy.

Sixteen teams participate in the tournament, which Spain has never won, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
