Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero yesterday accused U.S. authorities of protecting Julio César Chávez Jr. despite knowing since 2023 that an arrest warrant existed in Mexico. He also revealed that the boxer has already filed five or six injunctions in Mexican courts to avoid arrest upon his return to the country.

In a press conference at the headquarters of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, he explained that the boxer entered the US that same year with a tourist visa and lived freely there, protected by American law . They were perfectly aware of the order. He settled in the United States, married there, acted freely and completely in that territory, and has been there while we have been making requests for his return to us .

Gertz noted that this information was confirmed by both the U.S. government and the boxer's father, and he claimed that despite this, people are now questioning why he wasn't arrested earlier. "We've been making requests and notifications for a year and a half, and they didn't inform us until they arrested him ."

He recalled that, when the recent arrest was announced, it was the U.S. government itself that confirmed that Chávez had an arrest warrant in Mexico. We confirmed this and said that the arrest warrant had existed since 2023 .

The investigation stems from a complaint filed in 2019 by the U.S. Department of the Interior through its embassy, alleging crimes such as organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking related to the Guzmán group in Sinaloa.

The case identified 13 individuals responsible, including Ovidio Guzmán, Néstor Ernesto Pérez Salas, El Nini , and other operatives. Several were arrested and extradited; Chávez Jr. was included among the outstanding warrants since 2023.

Regarding his current situation, Gertz Manero said the defendant's attorney reported that there will be a key hearing in the U.S. today. Since that date, and according to his defense, five or six injunctions have been filed on behalf of this person seeking his release upon arrival in Mexico , he commented.

–But has he already been granted a provisional suspension?

No, we have denied the protection because the protection is not admissible, because we do not have it in our possession , Gertz Manero answered.
