MEXICO CITY (apro).- Civil Protection authorities in Tarimoro, Guanajuato, rescued 17 tourists who were trapped on July 14 in the Pichardo Waterfall area due to flooding caused by heavy rains.

According to initial reports, the rainfall recorded on Monday afternoon caused a significant rise in the water level.

The group of tourists reported to authorities that they were trapped in the waterfall, so emergency teams immediately activated the rescue protocol.

Local media reported that it took Civil Protection just over three hours to locate the victims and proceeded with rescue efforts, using ropes, specialized equipment, and logistical support to determine their condition.

Members of the Tarimoro Public Security Secretariat (SSP) also attended the scene.

After assessing the victims' physical condition, paramedics determined that there were no injuries, so they did not need to be transported to hospital.

"Thanks to the swift response and collaborative work of security personnel and the calm of those affected (...) a tragedy was avoided, and fortunately, everyone is safe," municipal authorities reported, according to local media.

They also called on the population not to underestimate the effects of the rainy season and to avoid visiting natural areas at risk, as rivers, streams, and waterfalls can suddenly rise in level, endangering lives.

The July 14 rainfall in Guanajuato also caused the San Renovato Dam, next to the La Olla Dam, to overflow.

According to local authorities, the water level in some of the city's tunnels reached considerable heights, forcing the preventive closure of several underground roads.

Emergency teams were deployed to various areas to assess the damage, while Mayor Samantha Smith urged the public to take necessary precautions and adhere to safety measures.
