It was one of the most important spas in Barcelona, but now it is a ghost building with a tragic history.

In the autonomous community of Catalonia, you can find some of the best spas in Spain, such as Caldes de Boí and Broquetas, among others. However, there was a time when there were other spas that became almost a place of pilgrimage for thousands of wellness tourism enthusiasts, such as the former La Puda de Montserrat Spa, which has gone from being a thermal landmark to becoming a gloomy place.
This fascinating spa located on the banks of the Llobregat River is in the municipality of Esparraguera, in the Baix Llobregat region. Despite once being one of the most impressive buildings in the entire area, it is now completely abandoned , with no trace of the splendor it once possessed. This thermal complex has remained unprotected against the elements for almost seven decades, although there was a time when the Catalan elite flocked to it to enjoy a few days of relaxation.
The ancient and gloomy spa of La Puda de Monsterrat
This spa was built in 1870 and quickly became one of the most sought-after destinations in the entire region among the wealthiest classes, especially those from Barcelona. Taking advantage of the nearby waters of the Llobregat River, the wealthiest people from Barcelona and its surrounding areas traveled to the heart of the region to bathe in the property-rich waters, which gradually led to the resort's expansion.
For decades it stood as a benchmark for thermalism in Catalonia, but everything came to an end in the mid-20th century, specifically in 1958: a huge flood of the Llobregat River flooded its beautiful facilities, destroying almost everything in its path and leaving the La Puda de Montserrat Spa in a state of ruin that has only worsened over the years.

This fascinating building has been the victim of vandalism for years, leaving hundreds of graffiti on its walls. However, the tragic flooding of the spa has given the complex a gloomy and eerie appearance that has been used by numerous artists, such as Nacho Cano and The Cult, among others. Today, it still stands, waiting for someone to restore it to its former splendor .
How to get to the La Puda de Montserrat SpaThe journey to the La Puda de Montserrat Spa from Barcelona itself takes just 40 minutes. From Barcelona, take the A-2 motorway and then the C-55 exit. Finally, take a slight signposted detour and park your car just off the road to continue walking for about 10 minutes to the building.
