The walled city with a historic port and a modern seaside resort on the Turkish Riviera

Turkey offers endless options for an exciting trip, but when we plan a trip to this exotic country, we usually choose Istanbul, the city that leads the way for tourists from Spain and around the world. But there's life beyond ancient Constantinople, and we're going to show you how. If you're looking to escape the tourist routine and explore new destinations, we suggest heading south along the Turkish coast to Alanya , a city divided by a hill into two parts. With its white-sand beaches and two thousand years of history, it's one of the most fascinating places in Europe.
An old town with magnificent views
Strolling through the old town along the cobblestone streets will immerse you in a traditional and authentic atmosphere. One of the highlights is the Castle District , surrounded by a strong, well-preserved stone wall. And, as in other Turkish cities, in Alanya's bazaars you can find time to practice haggling and fill your bags with handicrafts and local products. One of the most popular is Anjeliq , with stalls selling local foods, organic fruits, vegetables, and handmade items.
Alanya from above
Perched on the hill overlooking the city is this 13th-century fortress , one of the most interesting sites in this corner of Turkey. The interior of this Seljuk citadel houses several villas with Ottoman buildings and the Sueleymaniye Mosque . To get there, take the cable car and enjoy stunning views throughout.
The Red Tower and the walled port
To see Analya's iconic landmark, you'll have to visit its walled harbor . Built of red brick and octagonal, the Red Tower (Kizil Kule) is part of the wall and currently houses the ethnographic museum on the ground floor. It was built in 1226.
Take advantage of your time at the port to enjoy the renowned Turkish cuisine and fresh fish in the local restaurants, always accompanied by delicious mezzes (starters). We also recommend trying gözleme , a bread stuffed with feta and spinach, spiced potatoes, and minced meat, or testi kebabı , a stew of meat, vegetables, and spices cooked in a clay pot. You can also enjoy these and other culinary delights at the street stalls found throughout the city.
One of the best beaches on the Turkish Riviera
On one side of the hill lies the port and Keykubat Beach, and on the other, Cleopatra Beach, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. With its 2 kilometers of golden sand and views of the castle, it is also one of the most popular tourist spots in the region. It owes its name to the Egyptian queen who is said to have bathed in its waters. Very close to this beach is Damlatas Cave , with stalactites and a high level of humidity that is very beneficial for people with asthma.
In addition to being surrounded by the sea, this destination also offers traditional spas where you can enjoy Turkish baths, combined with modern spa treatments.
A Roman jewel unique in the world
Just over an hour's drive from Alanya is the impressive Aspendos Amphitheater , built almost 2,000 years ago during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. With a capacity for around 12,000 people, it is considered one of the finest Roman structures in the world. It is notable for its excellent state of preservation, especially the stage (scaenae frons) behind the stage. Take advantage of its proximity to visit it because it is a must-see on any trip to Turkey.
