Merijn supped 1250 kilometers to Nice for deposit, stopped meters before the finish

"Blocked at the finish", writes Merijn Tinga on his social media, who arrived in Nice after 1250 kilometers of SUP. Merijn left Paris about a month ago to draw attention to the deposit, but was stopped by the maritime police a few meters before the finish.
A small disappointment for Merijn, who had hoped for a 'heroic arrival at the Quai', with the encouragement of his team. Instead, the Supper had to dock on the beach, 'among the confused sun worshippers', he writes on social media.
UN Ocean Conference"Apparently, approaching the coast of Nice by paddleboard is off-limits during the UN Ocean Conference… Yes, the conference I am attending. No amount of explanation, four weeks of paddling or showing my UNOC accreditation helped."

Merijn's journey began almost a month ago, with which he tries to draw attention to a well-functioning deposit system in France.
"Deposit is really a very effective system to combat litter. It ensures 80 percent fewer bottles and cans on the roadside. I want to convince France of this," he told RTL Nieuws last month.
Deposit systemAccording to Merijn, there is no properly functioning deposit system in France. "Environmental organizations are even against it. While a party like Coca-Cola is in favor."
And although the arrival in Nice may not have gone exactly as he had hoped, he did achieve his goal.
World Oceans Day"But I made it. And I'll stay in Nice for a few more days – with events, a coffee with the mayor of Paris and of course the UNOC3 session on ocean pollution on Tuesday," Merijn writes.
Tomorrow, June 8, is World Oceans Day and a day later the World Oceans Conference starts in Nice, which Merijn will also attend and where he will speak in the supporting program.
