The Red Cross warned yesterday of extreme weather in Southern Europe. According to the organization, emergencies are looming. But these warnings are largely ignored. Research by the RTL Nieuwspanel shows that the Dutch are barely paying attention to this.
Due to climate change, extreme weather is becoming more common, especially in Europe. From heavy rainfall and flooding to dangerous heat and forest fires, the Red Cross urges people to be aware of this and to be well-prepared for their holidays .
Despite the urgent advice from the Red Cross, according to a survey of 21,000 members of the RTL Nieuwspanel, the Dutch are barely considering it. Eighty percent of people traveling to Southern Europe this summer aren't taking any precautions. They don't consider them necessary or will see it at their destination. Only 3 percent have an emergency kit. Three in ten participants have experienced extreme weather at their vacation destination in the past five years.
One in five (18 percent) is preparing. Most of them are being flexible. For example, they're not booking their entire vacation yet. Others are taking out additional or more comprehensive insurance.
