With pots and containers, you can transform any garden into a green paradise. From temporary flowering plants to permanent features like small trees and shrubs, potted plants add depth to your garden. They soften corners, brighten up dull areas, and allow you to easily change your planting. Here are 5 types of plants that thrive surprisingly well in pots and containers.

While large pots are more eye-catching and retain moisture longer, a playful collection of smaller pots creates a vibrant and ever-changing ensemble. Choose a style that suits your garden and taste. Repetition also works well – garden designers often use three or more identical pots with the same plants to create a spectacular effect. You probably already know that many garden classics thrive in pots; think petunias , fuchsias , hydrangeas , begonias ,pelargoniums , and more. But these five varieties also thrive in pots and containers. Combine them with plants that bloom at different times for maximum effect.

The colorful leaves of the spindle tree brighten up your garden all year round. Choose, for example, the native Euonymus europaeus (birds love the seeds from the berries it produces in autumn). For a striking combination, plant them alongside moneywort ( Lysimachia nummularia ), tulips , golden daffodils , or primulas.

Coral bells are an evergreen plant with striking leaves that come in a variety of vibrant colors, from lime green to chocolate-red brown. Heuchera works well as a background or accent alongside other plants. Combine the beautiful leaves with flowers in a similar color (above), for example, or with a flower bulb lasagna .

Hostas are beautiful plants that add a lot of shape and structure to your garden. They thrive in pots, both on their own and in combination with other plants. For example, try planting them with broken heart ( Lamprocapnos spectabilis , see above) or other foliage plants like heucheras.

Many Hebe varieties are compact enough to plant in pots. Most have evergreen leaves and display their beautiful flowers well into autumn – and sometimes even into winter, if the weather is mild. You'll find this plant in a variety of colors, from pink to purple and white. Plant Hebe alone in a pot or combine it withornamental grasses , or as shown above, with Spanish daisies ( Osteospermum ) and a fern .

Clematis is a popular climbing plant, but it's also a very suitable candidate for a pot or container. For example, let it climb on a homemade climbing frame or trellis. Choose clematis varieties with a more compact growth habit and plant them in large pots, perhaps alongside other impressive plants like roses . Clematis needs good drainage and sturdy support.
