Authorities arrest two fugitives from Newark ICE facility who escaped through drywall

Federal agents have arrested two of four previously arrested illegal immigrants who escaped from a New Jersey detention center this week. The fugitives managed to break through a makeshift wall, then crawl out into a parking lot and flee.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), working with the FBI, this weekend arrested Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada, who escaped from the Delaney Hall private detention center in Newark earlier this week.
Along with two other detainees, Castaneda-Lozada and Sandoval-Lopez literally “kicked out” the crude structure that was used to block off the detention center. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said Delaney Hall didn’t even have a permit to build such a structure. Sen. Andy Kim of New Jersey said the only thing separating the detainees from the world was “drywall with a piece of mesh in it,” which they easily managed. The politician announced inspections of the operator’s remaining facilities and did not rule out withdrawing the remaining detainees.
ICE and the FBI are still looking for two fugitives, Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes and Andres Pineda-Mogollon. Bautista-Reyes entered the U.S. illegally in 2021. During his time in the country, he was arrested several times for assault, threats, and illegal possession of a weapon. Pineda-Mogollon remained in the U.S. after his tourist visa expired. He has been arrested for theft and burglary, among other things.
