Communions 2025. Modest or lavish? At home or in a venue? How much for a plate this year?
At the beginning of May, and in some parishes even at the end of April, the First Communion marathon begins. As it turns out, few people organize a party for their family within their own four walls. Most rely on the professionalism of the venues, entrusting matters to industry experts, and the smallest parties can be organized for... 6 people. The expenses are considerable, so many parents try to find savings on some elements of the communion setting.
At the beginning of May, we entered the season of communion parties. The setting for an important event in a child's life is important for most parents, although voices are increasingly being heard that it should not overshadow the spiritual dimension of the ceremony, which is most important on that day. The size of the communion party, its location - at home or in a restaurant - and how much to spend on it are issues that each parent must consider individually. And these are often not small dilemmas.
[middle1]In Przemyśl, the two most popular and most booked dates for communion receptions are the second and third Sundays of May. But – as we hear from Joanna Matera, the owner of Dwór Wapowce, which organizes communion receptions every year – there are places in the Podkarpacie region, such as Rzeszów, where communions start at the end of April and last until June, and sometimes even take place on Saturday. All this to ease the occupancy in restaurants.
As it turns out, due to convenience, few people today decide to organize a party for their family at home, even if it is a really small group of guests.
- We sometimes organize a communion for 6 people, so it's a really small party. Previously, the decision was made to organize the party in a restaurant if there were more than 20 invited guests and it was difficult to host them at home, if only because of the lack of space, chairs or tableware. If we're talking about these lavish parties, they usually have about 50 guests - says J. Matera.
This year, Mrs. Agnieszka decided to take up the challenge of welcoming First Communion guests within the four walls of her own apartment in a block of flats.
- I think we can do it. I have experience in gastronomy, and I don't invite a large family, only the closest people - godparents and grandparents. In the kitchen, I will have support in the form of a friend who knows what she's doing and will help me prepare and serve meals. After all, home communions used to be the norm, and organizing a party in a restaurant is a big expense - she says.
New trends in organizing communion events, which were not observed a few years ago, are requirements regarding the menu resulting from various types of food intolerances. Separate meals are prepared for guests on a gluten-free diet or people suffering from, for example, phenylketonuria. Meeting the challenge is not a problem for restaurant chefs these days. This year, the cost of a party ranges from about PLN 205 to even over PLN 300 per plate, which results from the rising prices of goods and services. Naturally, restaurants offer discounts for children.
When it comes to the communion menu, the classics work well, such as broth plus a meat main course, dessert and a cold plate containing various types of salty and sweet snacks, cold cuts and salads. In selected establishments, it is possible to reduce the full offer to dinner with dessert, which - due to the costs - some customers ask about.
