Why is breast cancer so dangerous?
Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women, accounting for 24 percent of all cancer cases and 15 percent of cancer deaths. The initial stages of the disease do not cause symptoms, but breast cancer is curable if detected early. Regular mammography can detect even the smallest changes, increasing the chances of successful treatment.
Risk factors
One of the main risk factors is genetics. In Poland, about 10% of breast cancer cases occur in women with BRCA1 gene mutations. Additionally, the risk of disease increases after the age of 50, although young women can also get sick.
How can we reduce the risk of breast cancer?
Breast self-examination is very important – it should be performed regularly, once a month, 3 to 5 days after menstruation, to notice any disturbing changes.
Changes that are not palpable during a palpation examination are detected by mammography. This is an imaging test that takes two pictures of each breast. It is safe, and the radiation dose is low, similar to that used in a dental X-ray.
