Invasion of an alien species in a Polish city! It's unstoppable
The problem began a few years ago, in 2019. It was then that someone probably released representatives of a species dangerous to the local ecosystem into a pond in the Morskie Oko park in Mokotów. Currently, there are as many as 100,000 invasive individuals in the reservoir!
The marbled crayfish has settled in the Mokotów pond for good. It is one of the most unusual species of freshwater crayfish in the world. This is due to the undetermined area of natural occurrence and the lack of records of males. These crayfish reproduce as a result of parthenogenesis, or in other words, parthenogenesis, which also occurs in bees, wasps and many other insects and some arthropods.
This species has only been recorded twice in Poland before (in Szczecin, in 2009 and 2010), but even then the observed crayfish most likely came from aquarium breeding. Due to the fact that the marbled crayfish does not occur naturally in Poland , its presence has a harmful effect on other inhabitants of the Warsaw reservoir.
Marbled crayfish in MokotówThe city authorities are forced to organize regular catches of invasive crustaceans . This project, financed from the city budget, requires the work of two-person teams and the use of landing nets. The marbled crayfish not only adversely affects other species, but also creates difficulties in the reintroduction of the noble crayfish, which is the only native crayfish species for Mazovia. Dr. Eng. Rafał Maciaszek, the leader of the Alien Hunter project , assures, however, that marbled crayfish do not pose a direct threat to humans, provided they are not provoked.
