Żurawica tankmen remember their patron [PHOTOS]

As every year on the anniversary of the death of the patron of the 1st Tank Battalion in Żurawica – Colonel Józef Koczwara – a delegation of tankmen visited Szczepanów, where they laid a wreath and lit a candle of remembrance at his grave.

The Żurawica battalion – by virtue of the decision of the Minister of National Defense of June 20, 2011 – adopted the name of Colonel Józef Koczwara. By virtue of the same decision, May 11 was established as the holiday of the 1st Tank Battalion in Żurawica.

Colonel Józef Koczwara was born on 16 March 1889 in Mokrzyska near Brzesko, in the family of a farmer Julian and Jadwiga née Wesołowska. On 8 July 1931, as a cavalry officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he took command of the 2nd Armoured Regiment in Żurawica, which he commanded until 7 June 1934. In December 1933, the 2nd Armoured Regiment under his command was reformed into the 2nd Tank and Armoured Car Battalion. He died on 6 May 1978 in a social welfare home in Tarnów. He was buried in the cemetery in Szczepanów.
