The spa's expansion has fallen through. The city must repay an 18 million PLN EU subsidy.

- A modern natural medicine facility was to be built in Gołdap. Work began over five years ago, but was halted.
- The reason was irregularities found in the construction design and technical documentation.
- To implement this task, the commune received PLN 18 million in subsidies from European funds.
- The local government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship terminated the contract for EU funding for the project and now Gołdap must return the money.
- - We are taking steps to find new sources of financing that will allow us to complete the construction of this facility, which is important to us - says the mayor of Gołdap, Konrad Kazaniecki.
Ambitious plans to build a modern natural medicine facility in Gołdap (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) must be postponed for now. For how long? It's difficult to say at this time. However, it is known that the city must repay approximately 18 million PLN in EU funding.
The Gołdap Natural Therapy Center was to become one of the most significant investments in the spa's history . According to the design, the facility would have an area of over 2,000 square meters. The facility was to include treatment rooms, swimming pools, and a spa area.
- enumerates the Top.pl website.
Unfortunately, the implementation of this very important project for the development of the spa has been suspended.
The basic construction work was completed during the previous local government term, before 2020, when Tomasz Luto was mayor of Gołdap. However, according to information provided by the tko.pl website, construction was later halted due to the discovery of serious irregularities in the construction design and technical documentation. At the same time, the investment attracted the attention of the Supreme Audit Office and the prosecutor's office, among others, who initiated an investigation.
"After two years, the prosecutor's proceedings were dismissed. Attempts were made to resume construction, but they were unsuccessful. A new tender was announced in 2024, but it did not produce the desired results," Top.pl reports.
Mayor of Gołdap: it was not possible to obtain additional funds to enable the continuation of the projectIt turned out that this wasn't the end of the problems. On July 1st of this year, a statement was published on the Gołdap City Hall website explaining some of the circumstances that led to the construction halt.
"The scenario envisioned by the Gołdap Commune regarding the return of European Union funding for the construction of a natural therapy facility has been realized. On June 27, 2025, the Gołdap Commune received an official letter from the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship Board terminating the contract for this project ," we read in a statement signed by Konrad Kazaniecki, who became mayor of Gołdap in May 2024.
The reason for this situation - referring to the period of my term of office - was the lack of sufficient funds secured in the municipal budget and too short a time to carry out the necessary repairs and complete the investment
- explains the steward.
He admits that "despite many efforts and seeking financial support from various sources, we were unable to obtain additional funds to enable the continuation of the project."
- The decision of the voivodeship board did not come as a surprise to us, because we had exhausted all available legal and organizational options , with the involvement of employees of both the City Hall and the Marshal's Office - emphasizes the local government official.
"I believe that a new chapter is ahead of us and that further opportunities for development will emerge for our commune"At the same time, the mayor informs that "full documentation regarding the investment and its progress to date is being completed."
At the same time, we are taking steps to find new opportunities and sources of financing that will allow us to complete the construction of this important facility for Gołdap.
- states the mayor.
"I believe that a new chapter lies ahead, and that further opportunities for development will emerge for our municipality. I will keep you updated on all new developments and actions," Konrad Kazaniecki announced in a statement.
During the July session of the city council, at the request of the current mayor of Gołdap, part of the debt in the amount of PLN 13.78 million was settled.
