Greenland is not for sale, it is a country of free people who want to have good relations with the US and the EU
  • French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed ties with the European Union during a visit to Greenland.
  • The island's inhabitants do not intend to give in to pressure from the American federal administration.
  • Denmark is increasingly feeling pressure from local authorities; calling an independence referendum seems to be only a matter of time.

French President Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, paid an official visit to Greenland at the invitation of the new Prime Minister of the local government, Jense-Frederik Nielsen.

The talks held in the capital Nuuk focused primarily on the security of the island, the North Atlantic region and the Arctic.

A separate topic is the establishment of closer economic relations with the European Union, especially in the context of the use of valuable mineral deposits, including gold, copper and lithium.

Greenland is not formally part of the European Union.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory linked by special treaties to Denmark, which is responsible for security and foreign policy; the island is not formally part of the EU.

There is a US military base on the island , where the situation in the North Atlantic and the movements of Russian troops in the region are monitored.

Since President Donald Trump took office , he has been making public declarations regarding the possibility of armed action aimed at taking control of the island, which is inhabited by about 55,000 people.

Wanting to confirm their claims to this territory, a few weeks ago US Vice President JD Vance and his wife visited the American Pituffik Space Base.

During the visit, there was no meeting with representatives of local authorities, who considered the visit a political provocation against the will of the residents.

Emmanuel Macron arrived in the capital Nuuk for a few hours on his way to the G-7 leaders' summit in the Canadian Rockies in Kananaskis.

According to experts , the official talks with the Greenlandic authorities are another proof of European unity in the face of the difficult situation in international politics, especially the declaration of the American administration.

Denmark is increasingly concerned that the turmoil over Greenland could, over time, lead to the stimulation of independence tendencies among the local population.

It seems to be only a matter of time before an independence referendum is held in Greenland.

They come mainly from the Inuit ethnic group, but the Danes have also lived there for years and they also believe that it is possible to maintain ties with the crown while gaining the island's subjectivity in the international arena.

Tensions over Donald Trump's policies have paradoxically stimulated discussion about the status of Greenland , which for years has remained on the fringes of international politics.

In order to maintain existing relations, the Danish parliament passed a special law a few weeks ago that obliges the government to allocate approximately USD 1.5 billion to strengthen the island's defences and stimulate local economic activity .
