Moldova finally says goodbye to natural gas supplies from Russia's Gazprom

The Moldovan National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) has appointed state-owned company Energocom as the supplier of natural gas to approximately 830,000 retail end-users and small businesses. The change of operator will take place on August 31, 2025.
Previously, this function, as part of a special public service, was performed by OJSC Moldovgaz, in which the Russian Gazprom has a 63 percent controlling stake.
The decision was made in light of the real risk that Moldovgaz would not be able to meet its gas supply obligations due to the inability to import the raw material, the government statement reads.
Earlier, a tender was organized for the operation of gas supplies, but the submitted offers did not meet the formal requirements and therefore the government appointed a state operator.
Additionally, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced the decision that the state represented by Energocom will take over control of the entire gas infrastructure as of August 1.
Last year, gas consumption in Moldova amounted to 790 million m3, with monthly consumption during the heating season reaching 130-140 million m3.
