Second pension indexation in 2025? This is a huge support for seniors

Will pensioners get another increase in benefits in 2025? Everything indicates that the government is seriously considering a second indexation, which would mitigate the effects of high inflation.

The rise in the cost of living is hitting the oldest part of society the hardest. Although retirees received their first annual indexation in March 2025 , many of them are still struggling with a real problem. That is why there is growing talk of additional indexation , which could come into effect before the end of the year.

The year 2025 has not started well. Rising prices for food, medical services and energy are a serious burden on the household budgets of the elderly.

Although the March pension indexation brought increases, they were insignificant. Many seniors still complain that there is not enough money for basic needs.

This situation has prompted decision-makers to consider introducing a second pension indexation this year. The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy is currently analyzing a scenario for an additional increase in benefits if inflation remains high in the first half of the year.

According to the current Act on Pensions and Annuities from the Social Insurance Fund (Journal of Laws 1998 No. 162, item 1118), benefits are subject to annual indexation in March. However, the legislator also allows for the possibility of additional indexation if the economic situation significantly worsens the standard of living of pensioners.

The second indexation is not mandatory, but may be introduced by a government decision in special circumstances, e.g. in the case of high inflation - reminds the Social Insurance Institution. Although such a mechanism has already been discussed in previous years, it has not been applied so far. This time, however, real economic pressure may tip the scales in favor of the elderly.

According to statements by representatives of the Ministry of Family, the second indexation could be introduced in the fall , most likely in September or October 2025. However, the condition is that the established inflation threshold is exceeded in the first half of the year. Currently, the limit is said to be 5-10 percent, although the exact value will depend on the readings of the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

The second indexation would cover all recipients of ZUS benefits:

• pensioners
• pensioners
• people on pre-retirement benefits
• those who receive supplements to benefits (e.g. care)

The amount of the increases will depend on the adopted mechanism - percentage or amount . With inflation reaching 10 percent, increases from several dozen zlotys gross per month for the lowest benefits to several hundred zlotys in the case of medium and higher pensions are possible.

The Social Services Office offers, among others, an indexation calculator and the possibility of submitting an explanatory application via the Electronic Services Platform (PUE ZUS).
