The era of cheap gas from Russia is ending. A total ban will be introduced in winter

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed during a debate in the European Parliament on the war in Ukraine that by supporting the country, the EU must continue to undermine Russia's ability to wage war.

Fossil fuel revenues remain a key source of funding for Russia’s war machine. Our primary security interest is to stop funding Putin’s war chest. To do that , we need to stop spending billions on Russian energy imports.

She added that some people still claim that the EU should "turn on the tap" of cheap gas and oil from Russia, but - she stressed - this would be "a mistake of historic proportions".

We will not allow this to happen. Russia has repeatedly proven that it is not a reliable supplier. Putin has already cut off gas supplies to Europe in 2006, 2009, 2014, 2021 and throughout the war. Getting rid of Russian gas is not only necessary. It is possible and must be done.

The European Commission has announced that at the end of the year it will introduce a ban on concluding new agreements and spot contracts for the import of Russian liquefied gas and gas transported via gas pipelines.

The EC will present a proposal for changes in June. Long-term contracts will expire at the end of 2027.

The head of the PiS delegation in the European Parliament, Adam Bielan, assessed that there can be no lasting peace without justice, and there will be no justice without the full sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and the withdrawal of every Russian soldier from the territory of that country.

Peace cannot reward imperialism, divide Ukraine or legitimize conquest, because otherwise it would further embolden Russia in its imperialist revisionism. The European Union cannot lag behind either and must act for security. This means implementing solid, long-term security guarantees for Ukraine and using Russia's frozen state assets for Ukraine's reconstruction.

MEP Mirosława Nykiel (KO) stressed that there will be no free and secure Europe without a free and secure Ukraine.

These are not just words - they are the truth that most of us understand. That is why we support Ukraine and we will continue to do so as long as it takes . Because peace is the most important thing, but it cannot mean that Ukraine gives up its land and freedom. That would not be peace - that would be capitulation. We do not agree to peace on the Kremlin's terms. Let us not be deceived. Peace must be just, lasting and based on truth, not fear and submission.

According to MEP Krzysztof Hetman (PSL), Ukraine deserves peace as soon as possible, but on favorable terms.

For this peace, for the independence, for the sovereignty of Ukraine (we) also bear responsibility. We must show determination, supporting Ukraine militarily and humanitarian. We must quickly rebuild the European arms industry to effectively deter Russia and prove to it that if it wants to continue this war, we will consistently support Ukraine.

MEP Tomasz Buczek (Confederation) also took the floor in the debate. He said that neither Russia achieved its strategic goal - conquering Kiev and subordinating all of Ukraine - nor did Ukraine regain the lost lands.

Today, Europe faces the most important task: to prevent this conflict from escalating to the rest of the continent. We need armaments and strong European national economies with heavy industry. We need steel mills, rolling mills, the arms industry and modern technologies . We need economic freedom. We need to abandon the climate policy that is destroying our industry. Because wars are won with the economy and resources.
