USK Białystok invests in the fight against cancer

The USK in Białystok is the largest and most specialized hospital in the region. The hospital authorities initialed the contract for investment in oncology on Thursday - it was announced at a conference on Friday. The entire project is worth PLN 87.5 million, of which the KPO funding amounts to almost PLN 80 million.

The Rector of the Medical University of Białystok, Prof. Marcin Moniuszko, said that last year the University Medical University admitted 74 thousand patients to all departments, 18 thousand of whom were patients with various types of cancer.

He pointed out that demographic and epidemiological trends indicate that the number of patients with cancer will increase . Therefore, as he said, it is the duty of medical professionals to provide them with the best possible care, including diagnostics and treatment.

As the director of the USK, Prof. Jan Kochanowicz, said, the purchase of equipment was thought out by hospital specialists who deal with cancer patients on a daily basis. He emphasized that it was about purchasing high-class equipment.

He mentioned that the agreement will include the purchase of diagnostic equipment such as a computed tomography scanner and a device for scintigraphic tests, as well as equipment for diagnostics combined with the possibility of treatment, such as various types of endoscopic devices: for bronchoscopy and endoscopy.

One of such devices will be an ultrasound scanner, which will be delivered to the Endocrinology and Diabetology Clinic of Internal Medicine at the University Clinical Hospital. As the head of this clinic, UMB Vice-Rector Prof. Adam Krętowski, said, the hospital is the only center in the province that comprehensively treats thyroid cancers and, as he added, the center has more and more patients with this cancer.

- Thyroid cancer is also a growing epidemiological problem and we are now given the option of alternative treatment, i.e. thermoablation - said Krętowski.

He explained that the equipment is a laser, a device with ultrasound, thanks to which it is possible to treat the tumor locally, without the need for surgery. He emphasized that he was very keen to get this equipment, because it changes the chances of patients for better health. He said that thyroid surgeries are often mutilating, and then the patient has to take thyroid hormones for the rest of his life.

- Here, thermal ablation treatment of some smaller thyroid cancers results in the patient being healthy after a few treatments. From our point of view, this is also incredible progress. We are happy because our patients will indeed have access to this type of treatment - added Krętowski.

Among other equipment, a surgical robot will also be purchased. As Kochanowicz said, the idea is for patients to quickly return to normal functioning after severe treatment and difficult treatment. Thanks to the robot, it will be possible to remove cancerous lesions in a minimally invasive way, and this will be done by specialists in gynecological oncology, urology, surgery and surgery.

The hospital pharmacy will also be equipped with new equipment. Kochanowicz said it will be a modern station for preparing drugs that chemically fight cancerous changes.

As part of the project, clinics and facilities will also undergo modernization, which will receive modern equipment. When asked when patients will be able to use this equipment, Kochanowicz said that tenders are a procedure that takes several months.

Members of Parliament and representatives of state and provincial authorities present at the conference emphasised the importance of the hospital in the region, which needs to develop.

PO MP Krzysztof Truskolaski recalled that the funds from the KPO were released by the current government. Podlaskie Voivode Jacek Brzozowski emphasized that the money granted to the hospital is in fact an investment in the residents of the province.

In the summer, around PLN 8-12 billion in payments from KPO. What about the deadline for completing the investment? Efforts are underway to extend it
