After the leaders' meeting: the coalition still exists. But Szymon Hołownia is considered a traitor

After the leaders' meeting: the coalition still exists. But Szymon Hołownia is considered a traitor

Is the government facing a revolution? On Friday morning , one of the most important politicians of Poland 2050, Michał Kobosko, emphasized in an interview with "Rzeczpospolita" that the entry into the government of the remaining two leaders of the coalition parties - Szymon Hołownia and Włodzimierz Czarzasty - would be the best signal of a "new beginning". However, the meeting of the leaders, which took place a few hours later, did not change the fundamental situation. For Hołownia, such a variant is only possible on condition that Włodzimierz Czarzasty also joins the government. But this would mean that Czarzasty will not be the Marshal of the Sejm from November, which results from the current coalition agreement.

According to the findings of "Rzeczpospolita", there is no indication that Czarzasty would agree to this. However, the meeting of the leaders was fruitful. Donald Tusk was supposed to put proposals for changes in the government on the table. The main conclusion from the talks on Friday is that the coalition of October 15 still exists and will most likely carry out a reconstruction - not as radical as the entry of all the leaders into it, and probably not as deep as many people expected. However, it will be a change that will at least theoretically give a chance for a new beginning, which the government and all the coalition partners very much need. The only alternative is, in principle, early elections.

Szymon Hołownia at Adam Bielan's. He is again a "traitor" to the PO's hard-core electorate. Donald Tusk is out of the crosshairs

The background to the meeting, which lasted about four hours and was devoted to the aforementioned government reconfiguration, was the sensational information from Radio ZET and "Newsweek" that on the night from Thursday to Friday there was a meeting at MEP Adam Bielan's with the participation of Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia. Hołownia himself, in a statement issued after the leaders' talks, explained that he regularly meets with opposition politicians. As he reported in the same entry, the leaders' meeting itself was "very good".

The context of this story is that after Prime Minister Donald Tusk changed his tune on alleged voter fraud in the June 1 election, his stance was heavily criticized by Civic Platform’s most hardline online electorate. There was a prevailing sense of disappointment, even betrayal, in the prime minister’s performance by his most ardent supporters.

This is dangerous for the PO leader. And it has never happened on such a scale since Donald Tusk returned to Polish politics. On Friday, however, the situation returned to normal, the "traitor" for the PO's hard-core electorate on the web is once again Hołownia, and his representatives have started racing to report that they stand by Prime Minister Tusk. Some politicians from the KO itself and the Left have also joined in the criticism.

Government reconstruction: coalition partners are stuck with each other

It is worth noting that this week, a CBOS survey showed record low ratings for the government this term, with 47 percent of opponents and 32 percent of supporters. This is a stage that the PiS government, for example, only reached at the end of its second term. The leaders of the current coalition therefore have no room to maneuver.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk himself is also very unpopular. The reconstruction – even if it is not too radical or deep – must succeed so that the government has even a shadow of a chance for a new beginning in the autumn. There is currently no alternative majority in the Sejm. It is hard to imagine that KO would decide, for example, to get rid of Poland 2050 from the coalition and condemn itself to a minority government. This would be another step towards further drift, accelerating early elections.

The coalition leaders are therefore doomed to themselves: both in talks about reconstruction, personnel, and in the effective implementation of these changes. The more Internet emotions fueled by radicals in this coalition, the smaller the chances of all its members to survive. And this regardless of who saw whom and at what time – day or night. Therefore, the main conclusion after the meeting of the coalition leaders is that it still exists. Or: it still exists.
