Implementing the Department of Homeland Security's regulation is a multi-year process. The system will be implemented at US airports within the next year. Implementation at maritime and land border crossings, where it has been used to a lesser extent, will take slightly longer, three to five years.

National security and protection privacy

The introduction of the above changes has raised concerns about the loss of privacy of travelers and, with it, about how the photos will be used.

Quoted by cbc.ca, Jeramie Scott, senior counsel at the US Electronic Privacy Information Center, suggests that photos of people crossing US borders could also be used for other purposes, such as surveillance. In the past, President Donald Trump's administration has already demonstrated its willingness to misuse personal data, including when the US Treasury Department issued a decision to share confidential taxpayer data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
