Something disturbing is happening in Poland. It doesn't bode well

• April data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) show that Poland's population is systematically declining.

The demographic situation in Poland is very bad. There is no generational replacement. Every year, 100,000 to 150,000 people disappear from the labor market. The number of births in 2024 is about 252,000, while the number of deaths is 409,000. There are currently 37.5 million of us, but in 2-3 decades there will be only 30 million of us. This does not bode well.

Recently, in April, the Central Statistical Office published data on the population of Poland. And it is not good. The population of Poland at the end of the first quarter of 2025 was 37,437,000 people. This is almost 158 ​​thousand less than at the end of the first quarter of 2024 and over 52 thousand less than at the end of 2024.

The rate of actual decline in the period January-March this year amounted to -0.14%, which means that for every 10 thousand inhabitants of Poland there were 14 people left (3 more than in the first quarter of the previous year)

In total , only 58,000 children were born in the first three months of 2025. As a result, the birth rate was 6.2 per mille. However, the number of deaths increased .

In the first quarter of this year , approximately 112.5 thousand people died, which is almost 5 thousand more than in the same period of 2024. The death rate increased to 12 per mille. The natural increase amounted to - 54.5 thousand people.

Natural increase (the difference between the number of live births and total deaths) remained negative and amounted to -54.5 thousand. It is estimated that as a result of natural movement in the first quarter of this year, on average 58 people per 10 thousand people died (compared to 46 people a year earlier)

The data on infant mortality may be disturbing. In the period January-March, 0.2 thousand infants (children under 1 year of age) died.

This means that, despite the lower number of live births than a year ago, the infant death rate increased by 0.7 percentage points compared to the same period last year and amounted to 4.1%.

According to preliminary estimates , around 12,000 marriages were concluded in the first three months of this year (over 0.5 thousand more than a year ago). The marriage rate increased by 0.1 percentage points and amounted to 1.3%.

More marriages also fell apart. About 15,000 marriages were divorced, which is 0.5 thousand more than a year ago. The divorce rate increased by 0.1 percentage points and amounted to 1.6%. Separation - just like a year ago - was pronounced in about 150 marriages.
