Four goals and nine cards in the Champions League hit! This result will be crucial for the table

If someone thought the Club World Cup was a boring tournament with uneven levels, they had to approach this clash differently. The Paris Saint-Germain-Atletico Madrid match was like a Champions League match. And one from a later stage. The excitement was certainly added by the fact that the newly minted Champions League winner and one of Spain's top teams, the always dangerous Atleti, were fighting for the first points in Group B.

Matches of this type have already been held in the US during numerous tours of European giants, but never for such stakes. This was the first time that so many top teams had competed in the Club World Championship.

PSG and Atletico went head-to-head at the Pasadena stadium, the same venue where Jennifer Lopez sang her hit "Let's Get Loud" and footage from the 1999 Women's World Cup was later used for a music video.

The Paris TGV accelerated slowly, but did not slow down

In the match itself, the testing of strengths did not last long. The first blow was dealt by Fabián Ruiz in the 19th minute. The Spaniard fired a brilliant, flat shot from outside the penalty area, giving Jan Oblak no chance. Despite Atletico's attempts to respond, PSG controlled the game and dominated possession - the ball was at the French player's feet for 77 percent of the time.

Just before the break, the Parisians launched a deadly counterattack. Chwicza Kwaracchelia served Vitinha perfectly, and he coolly increased the lead to 2-0 in first-half injury time. A moment later, Atletico had a chance to get back into the game, but Antoine Griezmann's shot was safely caught by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The second half began with a strong attack from both teams. Chwicza Kwaracchelia almost extended his lead, but his shot from the corner of the penalty area was parried onto the crossbar by Jan Oblak. Atletico responded with a goal from Julian Alvarez in the 57th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review – the referee had seen an earlier foul by Koke on Desire Doue.

Atletico helpless and weakened

The match did not lose its pace – there was no shortage of emotions both on the pitch and in the referee's report. In the space of a few minutes, three Atletico players were shown yellow cards, and towards the end of the match Clément Lenglet was given a second yellow card and had to leave the pitch.

Atletico tried to change the fate of the match, but without success. Lack of precision, smart play by PSG and a good performance by Donnarumma in goal meant that the Spanish team was unable to score a goal. In the last quarter of an hour, the Parisians could have finished off their opponents - Jan Oblak made a mistake when bringing the ball out, but young Senny Mayulu was unable to get a shot on target.

It wasn't over yet. A mistake in Atletico's defense led to PSG taking the ball after... a failed move. Mayulu perfected it and hit it perfectly near the post. In added time, the referee, after a VAR review, awarded a penalty for handball. Lee Kang-In converted it into a goal.

Paris Saint-Germain got what they wanted – despite numerous attempts by Atletico Madrid, the Parisians maintained their lead and won 4-0 in the opening match of Group B of the Club World Cup. The French took the lead, ahead of Botafogo and Seattle Sounders, who will only start the competition.
