In Switzerland alone, there are more than a thousand highly qualified Portuguese people working in the pharmaceutical industry

The famous Portuguese resourcefulness is "a phenomenal characteristic" when it comes to innovating and solving problems. This is guaranteed by Daniel Guedelha, CEO and founder of GenH, a company based in Switzerland that aims to bring together Big Pharma, startups and young talent in the health sector.

With 16 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and a career that went from being an intern at Novartis to becoming chief of staff , the Portuguese entrepreneur shares two other very Portuguese characteristics on the Luso Lab podcast that are distinctive and can be very positive if "used for good". On the one hand, the habit of giving free feedback — if we don't like a dish, we complain, ask for it to be made better, "and that is valid information for the person serving us to improve", whereas a Nordic person doesn't eat and simply doesn't return to the restaurant —, on the other, "the importance we give to family, our connection to cultural values and emotional ties", which unites us more than the average.

António Brochado Correia: “It’s easy to train good technicians. Training good human beings is extremely difficult.” Watch the first episode of this season here.

These are advantages that the Portuguese, inside or outside the country, can take advantage of to become even better, he believes, assuming, for his part, the dream of "turning Portugal into a major European hub for the pharmaceutical industry".

Guest of the new episode of the Diaspora Council podcast , of which SAPO is a partner, launched this week on the usual platforms, Daniel Guedelha shares his vision and his journey, a journey marked by curiosity, persistence and purpose, in an interview conducted by Francisco Carneiro, young advisor to the Portuguese Diaspora Council and Data Engineer at Agicap.

"The health sector is an area with enormous potential and impact", stresses the entrepreneur, who, combining innovation with the desire to "give back to society", founded Generation Health (GenH) in 2024, whose experience he wants to use to spread to Portugal. And so that other companies follow his example and the country assumes a place as a hub in the pharmaceutical industry, he advocates a "proactive strategy to attract foreign investment, strengthen the national biotechnology ecosystem and better value Portuguese talent abroad". And he adds: "There are more than a thousand highly qualified Portuguese people working in this industry in Switzerland alone."
