Santo António Fair maintains the tradition of promoting Maronês cattle

The National Maronês Competition is one of the highlights of the event, held in Lordelo, in which almost nine thousand euros in prizes are distributed to the best specimens of the breed, awarded by the Municipality of Vila Real and the Maronês Breeders Association.
Manuel Rodrigues, from Bobadela, never misses the event, attending “every year”. He was a Maronês cattle producer and sometimes did business at this fair, which had its origins in the cattle trade. “This was my life, buying and selling, but now that I’ve gotten older I’ve stopped keeping cattle”, he says. The competition “is going well, the animals seem fine to me, but some gentlemen are not behaving themselves”, he said.
