Stock markets end the week in the red amid fears over the resumption of tariffs

Stock markets end the week in the red amid fears over the resumption of tariffs

European stock markets experienced a mostly negative day on Friday, due to fears associated with the return of trade tensions. On Monday, data regarding industrial production in Europe's largest economy will be released.

Here, however, the PSI index rose 0.30% and reached 7,777 points. EDP Renováveis shares rose 1.65% to 10.49 euros, while EDP appreciated 1.05% to 3.853 euros and REN added 0.98% and ended the day at 3.09 euros.

In the opposite direction, Semapa fell 1.04% to 17.18 euros per share. This was followed by decreases of 0.91% to 3.276 euros at Navigator and 0.80% in the case of Altri, which remained at 4.98 euros.

Abroad, the last day of the week was quite different and was marked by low trading volume, which was linked to the fact that Wall Street was closed due to the holiday celebrated in the United States. At the same time, there were sharp declines, which were associated with fears related to the tariff war.

The issue at hand is the deadline set by Donald Trump as the deadline for tariff negotiations, July 9th. For the European bloc, as well as for other powers that do not reach an agreement with the US, the tariffs will return. However, for now there is no white smoke in the negotiations between the US and the EU, so there are growing fears that tariffs of up to 50% by the US on the European bloc could return, as well as counter-tariffs, which could rise to 25%.

The banking sector suffered the most and punished the IBEX 35, which is the benchmark index in Madrid, as it fell by 1.34%. The highlight was the 2.57% drop in BBVA shares.

This was followed by contractions of 0.82% in Italy, 0.75% in France, 0.45% in Germany and 0.02% in the United Kingdom, in terms of benchmark indices.

Data on industrial production in Germany and retail sales in the euro zone, both for May, will be released this Monday.
