What is the 'anti-woke' wave? An international movement that pushes back against ideas focused on social issues.
The Estúdio i program discussed the topic this Friday (15). Watch the video above.
🔴 The concept is to be against people or works that address social issues.
"Woke is a somewhat pejorative term, because literally translated it means: awake. It refers to people who are awakened to issues and begin to measure the entire world based on the issues they consider: gender, ethnicity, religion, etc. One might think of identity politics," said commentator Arthur Dapieve.
In the United States, the political use of “woke” and “anti-woke” has intensified particularly after the election of Donald Trump.
The former president and allies use the term to criticize policies considered left-wing. In a social media post, Trump wrote: "The tide has radically changed—being 'woke' is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be."
Dapieve also cited institutions like the Smithsonian, which had to review nomenclature and exhibits due to pressure from the Trump administration.
On Thursday (14), the White House ordered a re-evaluation of exhibitions at Washington's main museums to “eliminate divisive or partisan narratives” and reinforce “alignment” with Trump's vision of the United States.
The repercussions of the “anti-woke” wave were also covered by international media outlets:
- The New York Times - Ultimately, Hollywood's business is giving its audience what it wants, not what it thinks it should want.
- The Guardian - Questioned whether the 'woke' will win again, noting that British progressives have suffered major setbacks in recent years, both in public opinion and in judicial decisions;
- DW - He highlighted that anything considered "woke" provokes anger, which is then directed mainly against people with left-wing or environmentalist political stances .
