Sold out sessions to discover the Rice Museum

Yesterday, the municipality of Estarreja celebrated International Museum Day with a programme packed with free activities that attracted dozens of families, curious visitors and lovers of local heritage to the municipality's museums. The celebration, promoted by the Estarreja Municipal Council, included guided tours and artistic expression workshops for all ages, led by the artistic collective Arisca, which designed proposals specially conceived for the municipality's museum spaces.
Throughout the day, the three main museums: Fábrica da História – Arroz, Casa Museu Egas Moniz and Casa Museu Marieta Solheiro Madureira, were open for free and guided tours, offering visitors the opportunity to discover or revisit the cultural and historical heritage of the region. The initiative was part of the celebrations of International Museum Day, established by ICOM – International Council of Museums, which in 2025 took place under the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Transforming Communities”, with a focus on youth, new technologies and intangible heritage.
Day full of activities with a full house
Early in the morning, at 10:30 am, the Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz hosted the “Pós de Arroz” workshop, a poetic and sensorial proposal that led participants to explore the universe of rice — a plant with over ten thousand years of history — through the creation of imaginary maps and symbolic images inspired by the local territory. Led by Ana Lopes, representing the Arisca collective, the activity involved adults and children in a visual experience that combined observation, memory and creativity. Speaking to Diário de Aveiro during the event, Ana Lopes explained that the workshop was specially designed for International Museum Day and was designed for families. “Here, adults are not just accompanying children, but active participants. We worked on textures, observing the rice grain and the agricultural landscape to promote a sensitive connection to the territory and the rice cultivation process, which is so important in Estarreja.”
The person in charge also revealed that registrations for the two workshops held quickly sold out, with 25 participants in each session. According to Ana Lopes, the public's participation demonstrates the community's growing interest in proposals that combine art, education and local identity. "Our hope is that people start to visit museums as spaces for meeting and sharing, not just as places for occasional visits," she highlighted.
In the afternoon, the program continued with the “Casa-do-desenho” workshop, held at the Egas Moniz House Museum at 3 pm. The proposal invited participants to explore the gardens and spaces of the museum with a careful and playful eye, using drawing and performative games to create an artistic object that transforms and unfolds.
