Electrified passenger cars on the rise

More than half of the passenger cars registered in Portugal in 2024 were electric, plug-in and hybrid electric. In total, 105,000 vehicles of this type were registered last year, a number that more than tripled in four years.
According to the Automotive Sector Statistics report, published this Tuesday by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP), diesel was the type of energy that declined the most, representing only 8.8% (18,443) of registered passenger cars last year. In 2020, it represented almost a third (32.8% or 47,741).
Gasoline also lost its share in four years, from 44.2% to 33.9% of light passenger vehicles. But the number of registered cars increased, from 64,232 to 71,072.
According to statistics released on Tuesday, electric, plug-in and hybrid electric vehicles accounted for 19.9%, 13.5% and 16.7% of registered passenger vehicles. In 2020, these types of energy represented only a fifth of the market.
In 2024, 209,715 passenger vehicles were registered.
