Visiting the beauty salon for a haircut, waxing, nail polish , and other treatments is, for many, a time for self-care and relaxation. However, certain precautions must be taken, as they can also pose a health risk .
This is because when beauty salons do not follow hygiene and biosafety practices, the transmission of fungal and bacterial infections and other serious diseases can occur.

Getty ImagesAccording to Michelle Zicker, an infectious disease specialist at São Cristóvão Saúde, the most concerning diseases are hepatitis B and C, which can be transmitted through the use of pliers and other unsterilized sharp instruments. "These viruses are extremely resistant in the environment: hepatitis C survives for up to three days, and hepatitis B can remain active for up to seven days," warns the specialist.
