Running is a democratic sport , meaning it simply brings together practitioners of various ages. It can be practiced in parks, streets, avenues, highways, or even in nature. The benefits aren't enough to dispel doubts among its followers, for example: does running contribute to increased muscle mass?
"Yes. Running is considered an aerobic exercise. Besides contributing to improved cardiovascular fitness, it can aid in fat loss, and consequently, muscles will become more visible. Furthermore, because running is primarily a lower-body sport, it's possible to observe strength gains and muscle mass gains through constant stimulation," says Matheus Vianna, personal trainer at Instituto Nutrindo Ideais, exclusively for Sport Life.
Likewise, Matheus emphasizes that a balanced diet is another fundamental factor for gaining muscle mass, but that there is no recommended path to achieving this goal.
"There's no ideal number of kilometers for this to occur, and the effect is always long-term. It's clear that running can offer benefits far greater than just muscle gain, including improved mental health," Vianna ponders.
