Mendes, Vitinha and Martínez in the running for The Best awards.

Portuguese footballers Nuno Mendes and Vitinha have been nominated for The Best Player of the Year award, while the Portuguese national team coach, Spaniard Roberto Martínez, is in the running for best coach, FIFA announced on Thursday.
The left-back and the midfielder, both from Paris Saint-Germain, are part of the list of 11 players competing to succeed Brazilian Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid), which will be reduced to three finalists after the voting that begins this Thursday and runs until November 28, without the organization revealing the date of the ceremony.
Besides Nuno Mendes and Vitinha, the other contenders for the award are Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain), who received the Ballon d'Or in September, Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Pedri (FC Barcelona), Raphinha (FC Barcelona), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Lamine Yamal (FC Barcelona).
Roberto Martínez, who led Portugal to victory in the Nations League, is one of seven nominees for best coach of the year, along with Javier Aguirre (Mexico), Mikel Arteta (Arsenal), Luis Enrique (Paris Saint-Germain), Hansi Flick (FC Barcelona), Enzo Maresca (Chelsea) and Arne Slot (Liverpool).
In 2024, Italian Carlo Ancelotti won the award for best coach, Emma Hayes won best women's coach, while Spaniard Aitana Bonmatí, who is on the list of 17 candidates for the 2025 award, retained her title as best player.
The coaches and captains of the men's and women's national teams from the 211 FIFA member associations will choose the three best candidates for each of the categories (player, goalkeeper and coach) in both genders.
Journalists specializing in women's and men's football, chosen to represent the media, and fans registered on the FIFA website can also vote in each of the awards.
The four voting groups have the same weight in the vote, regardless of the number of participants in each group — that is, the votes of coaches, captains, journalists, and fans will each represent 25% of the total, regardless of the number of voters in each category.
In addition to the individual awards, the FIFPro Women's Team of the Year and Men's Team of the Year will also be revealed, as well as the FIFA Fan Award.
The nominees for the Puskás and Marta awards—which honor the best goals of the year—have yet to be announced.
