VLADIVOSTOK, July 8 - RIA Novosti. Sakhalin activists are planning to fly to Kamchatka to help free a killer whale calf from a ring of plastic packaging tape that it was caught in, the volunteer marine animal assistance group "Friends of the Ocean" from Sakhalin reported on its Telegram channel. Earlier, scientists from the Far East Orca Project (FEROP) reported on social media that in Avacha Bay, a female AV25 named Willie gave birth to a calf, which was caught in a loop of plastic tape, and is now squeezing its body. It is noted that calves are not often born in Avacha Bay and rarely survive. "Friends of the Ocean" reported that they are working with FEROP on the possibility of conducting a joint rescue operation to untangle the killer whale calf, who is no more than six months old. "Our rescuers Slava and Pasha are going to Kamchatka. We are currently solving the necessary logistical issues. The Kamchatka residents are meeting the guys at the airport, helping with transportation to the work site, accommodation and field support for the group, for which we are very grateful to everyone," the statement says. Activists note that the situation with the killer whale is difficult, there is a possibility that it will not be possible to help her. "But we are convinced that we must try! Non-profit organizations have united to provide assistance to the injured whale calf - ANO Club Boomerang, ANO Dolphin Rescue Center Delfa and the Far Eastern Killer Whale Research Project (FEROP)," Friends of the Ocean report. Earlier, Vladimir Melnikov, a leading researcher at the Laboratory for Pollution and Ecology Research at the Ilychev Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a specialist in marine mammals, told RIA Novosti that it is not easy to help the killer whale calf in this situation: in order to remove the plastic, the animal needs to be caught.
