Mount Spurr volcano has become active near Anchorage, the largest city in the American state of Alaska. This was reported by the information portal Life.ru with reference to Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Pavel Plechov.

“Mount Spurr has begun to show ‘signs of life’... Measurements from aircraft and helicopters show that sulfur dioxide continues to emerge from the bowels of the Earth above the volcano, and this is another sign of an impending eruption,” Life.ru noted.

According to available data, the volcano's activity began in March of this year - over 60 weak earthquakes occurred there within a week.

According to Pavel Plechov, there is currently no absolute certainty of an impending major eruption. He added that a decrease in volcanic activity has already been observed in the Mount Spurr area, and the expected ash falls do not pose a threat to Anchorage, which is located approximately 120 kilometers away.

The threat of magma eruptions from deep within the Earth has long worried other Americans, too. Researchers recently discovered why the Yellowstone supervolcano in Wyoming has yet to “explode,” as millions feared.
