Scientists have assessed the territories of the United States of America from the point of view of security in the event of a hypothetical alien invasion.
The researchers modeled a scenario of contact with extraterrestrial civilizations, identifying areas that could become shelters for humans. According to the findings, the least at risk would be sparsely populated rural states of the United States, where an abundance of space and shelter would reduce the chances of attracting the attention of potential invaders.
The top 10 safest locations include Virginia (1st place), Alabama (2nd), Minnesota (3rd), as well as Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Alaska, and Georgia. In contrast, the desert areas of Nevada, Idaho, and Arizona pose the greatest danger — the open terrain deprives residents of the opportunity to effectively shelter.
Experts emphasize that although the probability of such a scenario is extremely low, its study allows us to assess the vulnerability of infrastructure and the adaptive potential of regions. Even a hypothetical threat makes us think about the balance between urbanization and the preservation of natural landscapes, the authors of the study note.
